Style Better, Look Bolder with Indian Bracelets

Women and jewelry are each other’s best friends - this much is a given. When it comes to Indian bracelets and Indian women, though, the connection goes much deeper. Forget the Tiffany label. Forget titanium-plated models. Indian bracelets may not be as expensive as more modern bling but they’re no less important or interesting.
Indian bracelets have a history almost as old as humanity itself. In days of yore, jewelry was worn as protection against evil. These were worn on the arms and the ankles and were the most popular forms of embellishments in the ancient world. Circular variations of Indian bracelets called Chudi are worn around the arms to signify a woman’s marital status. This arm band neither bends nor clasps and may be made of platinum, silver, gold, and other precious metals.
Today, Indian bracelets retain the same popularity not just among locals but also among females the whole world over. There are many types of Indian bracelets but the four most commonly worn today are the bracelet, the bangle, the kanghan, and the baju.
What sets Indian bracelets apart from the typical Western wristwear? There’s the material, for one. Indian bracelets are made from just about anything - cloth, metal, wood, rock, or shells. Then there’s the type. Indian bracelets may be cuffed, beaded, charmed, spiraled, or linked. The same goes for bangles. Made without clasps or any other forms of closure, these bangles can be textured, smooth, or layered with stones. The most popular bangles today are made of glass spanning a quarter to an eighth of an inch in width. They are worn in groups — the more you wear, the better so that every time you flick your wrists or move an arm, they make nice tinkling sounds.
What of kanghans and bajus? Kanghans are much thicker than ordinary Indian bracelets. They may be worn singly or in clusters and can be made of brass, metal, gold, wood, or silver. Sleeker, rounder versions of the kanghan, called kada, are worn by men. The baju, on the other hand, is an ornate arm band on a league of its own. Not only must it retain its position on the arm all throughout, it incorporates a pendant that acts like a talisman.
