A saree (sari or shari) is a length of un stitched cloth, often silk or some other fine material. Saree lenghts vary from four to nine yards or meters. The nine yard saree is the most popular in Western countries, where, a traditional saree is often worn at formal occasions. That said, many Indian women choose to wear sari’s as an every day wear, in which case a shorter less formal saree may be chosen. Wearing a saree is not a simple matter, as it has to be wrapped and folded in a particular way. The most common style for wearing a saree is for it to be wrapped around the waist. One end of the cloth is then thrown over the shoulder with the stomach left bare. Sari’s are often worn over a type of petticoat (pavada/pavadai or shaya), along with a choli choli (a short cropped top). Choli’s have short sleeves and a low neck and are usually cropped well above the waist. Often the backs of a choli are cut out to create a more striking “backless” design. Halter necks are also a common design trait of Choli’s. Sarees and Cholis are often highly decorated with embroidary, beaing, sequins and mirrors proudcing a very opulent garment. Although bridal saress are very expensive, it is possible to find very cheap and affordable sarees, which, although inexpensive are appropriate for very formal occasions.
